⭐ Our Tips - State of Origin Game 1

⭐ Match Result
NSW Blues to win by 1–12 points
New energy, new eligibility players and Tedesco’s attacking intent gives NSW the edge - but Queensland’s spine makes this a tight contest. Blues in a close one.

Any Starting Winger to Score the First Try

Our verdict: Great bet. The four starting wingers — Brian To'o, Tolu Koula, Selwyn Cobbo and Jojo Fifita — are typically the four most likely first-try-scorers in any Origin given how often the game opens with wide attacking shapes off scrums and early sets. $3.50 covers the field and is a standout value play compared to backing any single winger at first-try-scorer prices.

Key Storylines

Late change · Moses out
Hamstring strain rules out Mitchell Moses
Moses suffered a hamstring strain doing extras after training on Monday. Scans on Tuesday confirmed him out 48 hours from kick-off. Raiders five-eighth Ethan Strange elevates from the bench to start at six on Origin debut; Bulldogs five-eighth Matt Burton joins the bench following his five-star showing against the Storm last week. “He’s out,” Daley said. “It’s very minor, but it’s just too risky 48 hours out.” Daley expects Moses fit for Game 2.
Fullback battle
Tedesco recalled over Dylan Edwards
Laurie Daley made the toughest call of his selection - picking Tedesco over the incumbent Edwards for his attacking style. “Teddy got the job, just more around how we want to play,” Daley said. Edwards remains on standby and would be first call-up if anything changes.
New eligibility rules
Fonua-Blake & Radley make their Blues debut
Changed eligibility rules opened the door for Sharks enforcer Addin Fonua-Blake (previously represented NZ in 2017) and England international Victor Radley. Daley on Radley: “I picked Victor to be Victor. I don’t have to have a conversation with Victor.”
Latrell Mitchell out
Back injury rules out NSW’s most dangerous centre
Mitchell ruled himself out after deeming himself not fit enough for Origin intensity. “He was very selfless in that decision,” Daley said. Kotoni Staggs, despite serving a two-game ban recently, earns the call-up alongside Stephen Crichton.
Wing debut
Tolu Koula snares wing spot
Daley has been tracking the Manly flyer for “quite a while.” “Physically he is really strong and has got gas - in Origin, sometimes the difference between winning and losing is just a bit of speed.” Close to 100 NRL games and Test football for Tonga.
Huge Queensland call
Reece Walsh left out of the Maroons squad
One of the biggest selection calls of the series opener - Queensland have left out Reece Walsh, one of the NRL's most dangerous fullbacks in 2026, with Kalyn Ponga handed the No.1 jumper. Walsh has been in outstanding form for the Broncos and his omission is a major talking point heading into Game 1.
Payne Haas absent
NSW prop absent with MCL tear
Payne Haas misses through injury, opening the door for Fonua-Blake and Mitch Barnett to anchor the NSW front row. Liam Martin also unavailable with an MCL injury.
Queensland settled
Ponga–Munster–Walker–Grant spine intact
Queensland come in with their most dangerous spine combination. Harry Grant is among the best hookers in the game. Cameron Munster at six gives the Maroons creativity and physicality. The Dolphins provide 6 squad members - a club with clear State of Origin clout in 2026.

Match Analysis

This is the most rebuilt NSW side in several years. Seven new faces, two players debuting under changed eligibility rules, and now a 48-hour halves reshuffle — Mitchell Moses ruled out with a hamstring strain, Ethan Strange thrown in at five-eighth for his Origin debut. Strange has trained with the Blues all week and Daley likes his strong running game (“at this level, if you’ve got a strong running game and you want to challenge the defence, you’ll do well”). Cleary now shoulders the senior playmaking load and will direct the game.

Queensland's settled spine is their biggest advantage. Ponga at fullback is electrifying and will be a constant threat from kick returns. Munster at six adds flair, Walker at halfback brings the organisation, and Harry Grant is arguably the best hooker in the NRL. The Maroons will target Strange on debut and force him into early decisions under pressure — expect Munster to run hard at the rookie five-eighth.

NSW's new-look forward pack with Fonua-Blake and the returning Isaah Yeo as captain is built for physicality. Victor Radley off the bench adds high-energy defence and carries, and Burton on the bench gives Daley a senior playmaker cover if Strange wears down. The question is whether the new combinations click in a first game together.

NSW have the individual talent across the park and the home advantage of Accor Stadium. The market reflects that — Blues at $1.65 favourites, -2.5 on the handicap, total at 41.5 either way. The 1–12 margin market suggests a game decided in the final 20 minutes by one or two plays.

FAQs - State of Origin Game 1 2026

State of Origin Game 1 2026 kicks off on Wednesday 27 May 2026 at 8:05 PM AEST at Accor Stadium, Sydney.
NSW Blues vs Queensland Maroons. NSW are captained by Isaah Yeo with Nathan Cleary at halfback and Ethan Strange at five-eighth on Origin debut (Mitchell Moses ruled out with a hamstring strain; Matt Burton joins the bench). Queensland are led by a spine of Ponga, Munster, Walker and Harry Grant.
Coach Laurie Daley selected Tedesco for his attacking style, saying "Teddy got the job, just more around how we want to play." Dylan Edwards did nothing wrong but Tedesco's form in 2026 was impossible to ignore.
We like Brian To'o on the right wing - Tedesco's attacking game creates width and To'o is the natural beneficiary. Kotoni Staggs in the centres is also a strong each-way play at longer odds.
Latrell Mitchell ruled himself out with a back injury, saying he didn't feel fit enough to get through an Origin contest. Kotoni Staggs takes his place in the centres alongside Stephen Crichton.
